Attorney-General Judith Collins has refused to apologise to Lake Alice survivor Karilyn Wildbore for stating at the UN in 2014 that there was no state torture in New Zealand—a decade before the government formally acknowledged torture at the Lake Alice child and adolescent unit.
Collins said her comments were based on a 2013 UN report that found no evidence of torture in New Zealand’s detention facilities. Despite the government now offering redress payments to survivors, Collins maintains her remarks were not wrong, prompting criticism from Wildbore, who accused the government of ongoing denial and lack of accountability.
Wildbore said Collins should have been aware of the abuse at Lake Alice, given compensation began over a decade before 2014, and noted the government only officially labelled the treatment as “torture” last year under psychiatrist Dr Selwyn Leeks.
“Denial’s the name of the game at the moment. No matter what you do, people don’t want to be responsible,” she said.

Judith Collins has always presented herself as a person who will always do right. However once in power or a position of responsibility, she falls short of expectation. This occasion is no exception. It is normal for her.

There is no public place these scoundrels can’t relax in wthout body guards.

While we are on the subject, New Zealand has a long history of torture. The treatment of Conscientious Objectors during the world wars, soldiers who were known as pressmen forced back to fight during WWII in spite of being exhausted and suffering shell shock (now the polite term PTSD which does not do the condition justice), the mistreatment of protesters, Massey’s Cossacks, then later again during the watersider’s lock out, the abuse of children in state care, in schools (who ever thought hitting kids with canes was anything other than cruel and degrading), the abuse and in some cases retardation of people in state mental institutions, the abuse of the public during COVID which could easy be called a form of torture, taking peoples jobs, locking them in their houses. Then there’s excessive taxation, creating stress and trauma for hard working people, the list goes on and on.
