Construction is underway on a new $50 million Hikuwai Bridge to replace the cyclone-damaged structure on State Highway 35 between Tolaga Bay and Tokomaru Bay, Transport Minister Chris Bishop has announced.
The new 100-metre, two-lane bridge will follow the old alignment but include modern features to better withstand flooding, earthquakes, and debris, ensuring long-term resilience for the East Coast’s vital transport link.
Local companies will join the Transport Rebuild East Coast Alliance and lead contractor CLL Service and Solutions in delivering the project, with piling set to begin in late October.
The bridge is part of the Government’s priority to restore robust infrastructure for communities and freight after Cyclone Gabrielle cut off key connections.
It’d be cheaper to buy a boat and just leave it at the river for people to cross in.
