Documents obtained under the Official Information Act have raised questions about potential conflicts of interest involving Labour MP Willie Jackson, after a charity led by his wife received more than $5 million in Ministry of Social Development contracts within nine months of his 2023 ministerial appointment.
According to an investigation by Lobby for Good, the Manukau Urban Māori Authority (MUMA), run by Tania Rangiheuea, also recorded a sharp rise in annual income to over $16 million during the same period.
The analysis highlights the timing and scale of multi-year contracts awarded before the 2023 election, alongside an apparent absence of a declared conflict relating to Jackson’s social development portfolio.
While no direct wrongdoing is alleged, the findings point to gaps in transparency and raise questions about whether Cabinet conflict-of-interest guidelines were properly followed, with calls for clearer public accountability over the decisions.
Perhaps the best way to work out what happened is for the serious fraud office to launch an investigation. Jackson to stand down until a finding has been made.
