A pair of alleged thieves were left empty handed in Onehunga after being caught in the act by Police Tuesday afternoon.
Senior Sergeant Tony Ngau Chun, Auckland City East Area Response Manager, says at about 3.45pm two men were seen inside an abandoned house on Nissan Place.
“The witness called Police as they knew this dwelling was not occupied.
“One of the men was crawling around beneath the house as if he was looking for something.”
Police units arrived shortly afterwards and arrested the man without issue.
“A Delta dog unit tracked the second man some distance away from the address,” Senior Sergeant Ngau Chun says.
“He was also arrested without incident.”
A search uncovered a saw and an amount of copper material.
“These alleged offenders were attempting to take advantage of the house being unoccupied and help themselves to the copper piping,” Senior Sergeant Ngau Chun says.
“This was a good result by our staff, quickly on the scene and preventing further offending.”
A 48-year-old man appeared in the Auckland District Court yesterday charged with burglary.
Enquiries are ongoing with further charges likely.

Photographs with name and details of criminal activity posted on an online dedicated website would soon put a stop to all this nonsense. Murderers, rapists and pedophiles as well. Their right to privacy only adds to the collapse of civil society.
I’ve often thought that publicly shaming small time crooks and miscreants would go a long way to making people think twice before committing a crime. If they were placed in stocks in a public place and people could throw wet sponges at them it would create an environment where people would think twice before doing the crime.
Public caning for more serious offences would have a similar effect. I suspect crowds of people would regularly attend.
At the very least anonymity should be dropped – even for wealthy offenders and teachers etc.

Let’s have community work days for dole bludgers as well. I bet they would find a job real quick over been seen doing this.
