Police have unveiled a new public awareness campaign aimed at preparing New Zealanders for the unlikely event of an armed attack in a crowded place.
The initiative, part of the nationwide Crowded Places Strategy, promotes the simple safety message: Escape. Hide. Tell.
Assistant Commissioner Mike Johnson said the campaign is about ensuring people know how to respond if faced with danger in everyday environments like malls, markets, transport hubs, or sporting events. “Like anything we do, it’s important to have plans in place. The goal is that none of us will ever need to use this information. It’s about being prepared,” he said.
The campaign encourages people to move quickly and quietly away from danger, stay hidden with phones silenced, and call Police on 111 when safe. Johnson stressed that Police will continue working with businesses to prevent such attacks while also equipping the public with knowledge that could save lives.
Support for the campaign has come from both business and community leaders. John Yates, Director of Security at Scentre Group, said Westfield malls nationwide will display the message on digital screens. “Remaining vigilant when in public and remembering these three words could make a difference,” he said.
Community Advisory Group Chair Paul Patel described the campaign as a vital step in empowering communities to respond with clarity, while Business Advisory Group Chair Mat Hellyer emphasised the shared responsibility of businesses in keeping public spaces safe.
“Crowded places are where much of life happens,” Hellyer said. “This campaign strengthens resilience and ensures our spaces remain welcoming and secure for all.”
Why? Are they planning one?
My first thoughts too. If anything happens we will know who is behind it then won’t we. How dumb do they think we are? 😂
“…for the unlikely event of an armed attack in a crowded place…” Like when you scumbags raided sleeping unarmed protesters in front of the beehive?
Depending on the attack and place, some people will stand and fight. Like the knife attacks in London, Sydney, and New Lynn.
Flight or fight. Some people will fight to protect others and themselves. Cowering in a corner don’t always work
Who’s going to protect you from goon squad brutality? Not the so called justice system, a free ride every time.
More propaganda, you need to live in fear, it’s ridiculous.
And if nuclear war breaks out, shelter under a desk and cover your head.
B@3Tards. Fear and more fear.
Projection much!
Obviously their ‘gun registration’ is expected to have no impact in preventing anything.
We all know where the soft underbelly of NZ is
And it would be so easy to do
Here’s MY rules for dealing with an..’attack’, barring a nuke which has survivable limitations based on blast radius;
1. Identify your target committing the crime-in-progress-
2. Cock your firearm-
3. Close in on the target, minimise the distance for a more accurate target acquisition-
4. Warn the target to stop / cease / & drop to the ground-
5. If the target does NOT comply, and continues to harm / kill, then
6. TERMINATE THE THREAT – NEUTRALISE THE TARGET IN FULL TOTALITY!
A vote for the NZ Loyal Party will restore the International Human Right for SELF-DEFENCE so that law-abiding New Zealanders can protect themselves, their families, their businesses and other Kiwis in their own country,
What a cowardly plan!
This is EXACTLY WHAT IS WRONG WITH NEW ZEALAND!!!!
Knife attack deterrence is a learned skill.
Besides, I carry a perfectly legal Swiss Army blade that is under 10cm’s and is perfectly legal to have and carry, and I know how to ‘wrap, stance and exploit’ if / when needed.
I know full-well from past experience in another country that by allowing a deranged stabber to continue in their activity will create more casualties / death! This is the end effect and result of what this new Police poster does.
Hence, I will ALWAYS step-in to stop such a mass casualty event.
And, the law for self-defence needs to change, whereas a person defending oneself or others should NEVER be criminally-charged for doing so!
NZ Loyal Party will change the current laws that prosecute those who defend themselves, their families and their businesses and others from harm.

New Zealand Loyal – The Right to Self-Defence
We, the people of New Zealand, assert our fundamental right to defend ourselves, our families, businesses, and lands. This inherent right is not granted by the government, but rather, it is the government’s duty to protect and respect it.
For too long, the government has overstepped its bounds, dictating how we can and cannot protect ourselves. This is a clear violation of our rights and freedoms. NZ Loyal is committed to restoring the balance of power, ensuring that individuals are responsible for their own lives, and that the government is responsible for protecting our rights.
The Principles of Self-Defence
1. Inherent Right: The right to self-defence is inherent and inalienable. It is not something that can be taken away by the government.
2. Personal Responsibility: Individuals are responsible for their own lives and the protection of their loved ones.
3. Government’s Role: The government’s role is to protect our rights, not to dictate how we exercise them.
4. Crime and Victimhood: A crime is committed when a victim is created through harm. The government’s focus should be on protecting the rights of victims, not on disarming law-abiding citizens.
Policy Objectives
1. Repeal of Restrictive Firearms Legislation: NZ Loyal will repeal laws that unfairly restrict our right to self-defence.
2. No Licensing Requirements: We will abolish licensing requirements for firearms, instead focusing on education and training leading to a certificate of competency.
3. Protection of Property Rights: We will ensure that property owners have the right to defend their lands and businesses against trespass and harm.
4. Accountability and Transparency: We will establish robust mechanisms for investigating and addressing complaints of government overreach and abuse of power.
By restoring our right to self-defence, we can rebuild a safer, more responsible society, where individuals are empowered to protect themselves and their loved ones. Join us in our mission to reclaim our rights and freedoms.

As of September 17, 2025, there are approximately 3,200 disabled American veterans living in New Zealand. This number is based on data from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the New Zealand Ministry of Defence. The majority of these veterans are concentrated in cities like Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch, with many drawn by New Zealand’s favorable climate, lower cost of living, and welcoming culture. There are no official statistics on the exact number of American veterans living in New Zealand. However, it’s estimated that between 5,000 to 10,000 American expats, including veterans, reside in New Zealand. Many are drawn by the country’s natural beauty, relaxed lifestyle, and relatively low cost of living. Some notable communities include Queenstown, Wanaka, and Auckland, where veterans often settle for outdoor activities and a quieter pace of life.
