A Coroner has recommended installing warning signs at a popular Waikato River swimming area following the drowning of a young parent who was swept away by strong currents while swimming with a child.
The Coroner found the death to be a tragic accident and highlighted the hidden dangers posed by fast-moving water near the site’s bridges – the area known as The Point near Ngaruawahia.
Authorities were urged to put up signage warning of strong currents, diving risks, and jumping hazards, while Water Safety New Zealand said it would work with local agencies to assess the value of new signs and expand river safety education initiatives in the community.
