Former Police Commissioner Andrew Coster says he had “absolutely no idea” staff were allegedly instructed to divert emails about former Deputy Commissioner Jevon McSkimming away from Police Minister Mark Mitchell’s office, despite Mitchell claiming 36 such emails were withheld from him under a protocol set by police.
Coster, who resigned as head of the Social Investment Agency after a damning IPCA report on the McSkimming case, told state media’s Q+A he first learned of the alleged protocol only after the report’s release, insisting police staff could not have intercepted ministerial emails.
He referenced a recently discovered file note showing discussions between ministerial services and his office in early 2024, directing emails to Deputy Commissioner Tania Kura, though he said he did not know why the note was created retrospectively.
Police later confirmed the note’s details and said it was typed up in November 2025 to create a digital record. Mitchell responded that Coster’s denial was “unfathomable,” claiming multiple police staff had verified the protocol originated from Coster’s office and that ultimate responsibility rested with him.
