Cyclone Gabrielle cookbook ‘The Dinner Club’ becomes victim of cancel culture

Wardini Books in Hawke’s Bay has decided to stop selling ‘The Dinner Club’, a cookbook by Jane Morgan designed to support Cyclone Gabrielle relief efforts.

The decision by the owners of Wardini Books Gareth and Louise Ward came after they responded to a complaint alleging Morgan’s social media posts contained ‘anti-trans and anti-Māori’ views.

Morgan, who has been actively supporting displaced families since the cyclone hit, intended for the cookbook’s proceeds to aid recovery in the region. Her efforts were undercut by the Wards’ decision to pull her book based on what they deemed incompatible with their shop’s philosophy. This move has sparked heated debate online, drawing criticism from those who view it as an unfair judgment that prioritises political correctness over community support and free speech.

Cam Slater and others rallied to Morgan’s defense, but the Wards, while regretting the public backlash, stood by their decision, framing it as a ‘business choice’ rather than a political statement.

Copies of the book can be bought on Trade Me, or on the book’s website, or at Silky Oak on Links road in Napier. Orders can also be placed by email to: thedinnerclub-hb@mail.com.

  1. The activists are doing FAR MORE to make the public anti-trans and anti-woke than anything the right wingers are doing online.

Good stuff, guys. Keep it right up 👏 👏👏

    • Agreed. If we had any tolerance for trans people before, it’s completely gone now. We’re pushing back on the woke and we ain’t gonna stop! 👏👏👏
