Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has warned that Denmark is facing a “decisive moment” over Greenland, after U.S. President Donald Trump renewed statements suggesting Washington could seize control of the Arctic territory.
Speaking ahead of high-level meetings in Washington focused on competition for critical raw materials, Frederiksen said there is now an open dispute over Greenland that carries consequences far beyond the island itself. Addressing a debate with other Danish political leaders, she said the situation marks a turning point for Denmark and for the international order.
In a separate statement, Frederiksen said Denmark was prepared to defend its values “wherever it is necessary – including in the Arctic.”
Trump has argued that U.S. control of Greenland is vital for national security, citing increased Russian and Chinese activity in the Arctic. He recently reiterated that the United States would “do something” about Greenland regardless of Danish objections.
Denmark has received growing support from European allies. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson condemned what he called Washington’s “threatening rhetoric,” warning that a forced takeover of Greenland would violate international law and set a dangerous global precedent. Germany and Sweden both reaffirmed their backing for Denmark and Greenland as diplomatic talks in Washington approach.
Kristersson told a defence conference in Salen, attended by NATO’s top US general, that Nordic, Baltic and other European countries stand firmly with Denmark. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul also reiterated Berlin’s support, describing Arctic security as an increasingly critical NATO concern during talks in Iceland.
Concerns over Greenland’s security have prompted reports that European military leaders are discussing potential NATO contingency plans for the region. Britain’s Telegraph reported that early-stage talks among UK, German and French officials have examined options for a possible NATO presence in Greenland, potentially involving troops, naval vessels and aircraft.
UK Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said discussions on deterring alleged Russian activity in the Arctic were routine among NATO allies, describing the region as an increasingly contested geopolitical arena.
Belgian Defence Minister Theo Francken has also called for a dedicated NATO operation in the Arctic to address security concerns, suggesting a model similar to existing Baltic and Eastern European monitoring missions.
Greenland, which was a Danish colony until 1953 and later gained home rule, remains a self-governing territory and has signalled interest in eventually loosening its ties with Denmark. Opinion polls consistently show strong opposition among Greenlanders to any US takeover.

The many nations that are interested in Greenland all have ulterior motives towards each other, so this is essentially a ‘Battle for Control of the High Ground’ that has war-sustaining natural minerals, oil and gold.
Russia has 20+ nuclear-powered icebreakers, and subs stationed under the ice; the U.S. has 2 icebreakers and around 2 subs at any given time.
Denmark was anticipating this situation, but IF the U.S. goes into Greenland, it will be forced to share the mining wealth with Denmark via a Natural Resources Treaty. Even the effort to strengthen the Danish Military would still require possible Scandinavian participation from the Nordic nations..
