Diesel power returns to Marsden Point amid energy concerns – Jones

Marsden Point news

A new diesel power plant is set to be developed at Marsden Point, marking a significant shift in New Zealand’s energy strategy, said Associate Energy Minister Shane Jones.

The refinery company, strategically positioned near a deepwater port, plans to generate electricity by importing and utilizing diesel, a move lauded by Jones as “shrewd thinking.”

Jones emphasised the necessity of fossil fuels for industry, manufacturing, and economic growth, while criticising environmental activists—whom he dubbed “climate munchkins”—for opposing oil and gas developments.

His comments also took aim at legal challenges from climate alarmists seeking to curb fossil fuel expansion through the Supreme Court.

Jones called for a review of energy policies, arguing that the country’s reliance on renewable energy and corporate decisions had contributed to job losses and an unreliable power supply.

As winter approaches, concerns over energy security continue to grow, he said, sparking renewed debate over the balance between environmental commitments and economic resilience.

Critics however responded to the news urging Jones to go a step further and rebuild the refinery entirely.
