Rameka Rewiti, 21, has been sentenced to 12 months’ home detention after performing a burnout in front of police and then crashing into a tree while intoxicated, killing his younger brother, Aperahama Rewiti, who was in the passenger seat.
The crash occurred in May 2023 in Whangārei after the brothers had been drinking, with Rameka later found to have more than double the legal alcohol limit and MDMA in his system.
His defence lawyer described the incident as a tragic result of an impulsive and reckless decision, highlighting the long-term emotional toll on both Rameka and his family.
The judge noted aggravating factors including intoxication, excessive speed, and showing off, but acknowledged Rameka’s remorse and the support of his family.
