East Coast rugby player dies after collapsing during match

East Coast rugby death news

The match took place this morning in Ruatoria between the Ruatoria City club and the Ruatoria Centenntial XV.

The game was called off following the incident. It was played to mark the centenary of the Ruatoria City club, and was a curtain raiser to this afternoon’s Lochore Cup Heartland Championship final between East Coast and Mid Canterbury.

Emergency services, including a rescue helicopter from Gisborne were called to the scene at Whakarua Park.

Despite extensive efforts to save the player, he died on the field.

The Heartland Final match went ahead, with the second half about to start.
