The European Union is preparing to create a new body to monitor and counter what it calls foreign “disinformation,” prompting warnings that Brussels is formalising a system of censorship.
According to a leaked European Commission document obtained by The Guardian, the proposed “Centre for Democratic Resilience” would form part of a wider “democracy shield” initiative championed by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during the 2024 European elections. Participation would be voluntary, with the EU inviting “like-minded partners” such as the UK and potential accession countries to join.
The draft proposal accuses Russia of spreading false narratives and engaging in “hybrid attacks,” while also naming China as a source of influence campaigns through public relations firms and social media influencers. The stated goal is to protect public trust in democratic systems, though the document provides few details on evidence supporting these claims.
Critics argue that the centre will institutionalise censorship under the pretext of combating “disinformation”, expanding the EU’s authority to shape online content. The new agency would coordinate with “fact-checkers” and “social media influencers” to promote what Brussels deems accurate information, complementing existing powers under the Digital Services Act, which requires platforms to remove “harmful” content.
The proposal also cites the cancellation of Romania’s 2024 presidential election as an example of alleged foreign interference. However, some observers, including Telegram founder Pavel Durov, accuse the EU of pressuring social media platforms to suppress conservative voices during elections in Eastern Europe, describing the bloc’s approach as a “crusade against free speech.”
The United States has also distanced itself from the EU’s tightening control over information. The US State Department labeled Brussels’ initiatives “Orwellian,” saying censorship cannot be equated with freedom. Vice President J.D. Vance criticized European leaders for fearing dissent, remarking that “if your democracy can be destroyed by a few online ads, it wasn’t very strong to begin with.”
Europe always had a thing for fascism. Looks like granddads jack boots are coming out from the closet, once again. We need to be vigilent here too, Australia has always gone down this path with their draconian, UK style, hate speech laws. National and Labour have both made moves in this direction.
