Explosion reported near US embassy compound in Baghdad

An explosion has reportedly taken place near the United States Embassy compound in Baghdad, raising fresh concerns over security in the Iraqi capital.

Initial reports indicate a bomb or explosive projectile landed within or close to the heavily fortified Green Zone, where diplomatic missions and government buildings are located. Iraqi security forces moved quickly to secure the area while assessments were carried out to determine the extent of any damage and whether there were casualties.

The US Embassy has not yet released full details. Sirens were reportedly heard in the area following the impact, and emergency response teams were seen entering the compound shortly afterwards.

The incident comes at a time of increased instability across the region, with concerns that US diplomatic and military sites could become targets as wider tensions continue to escalate.
