The National Party has copped fierce backlash on social media over its plan for Digital Driver’s Licences.
National’s plan to introduce digital driver’s licences has ignited a wave of fierce backlash online, with critics accusing the government of ushering in an “Orwellian digital prison” under the guise of “convenience”.
In a tweet announcing the move, the party said: “We’ve introduced legislation for digital driver licences, making it easier for you to have your licence on your phone instead of in your wallet.”
The announcement was met with immediate and heated criticism across social media. Many users argued that digital licences were unnecessary and raised concerns about privacy, surveillance, and coercion.
One critic responded: “Many of us don’t carry a phone everywhere we go, main reason being we don’t want anyone tracking our movements. I’m not carrying a phone just so I can have a digital driver’s licence. The least you could do is be honest and say it’s an instruction from the WEF!”
Others rejected the proposal in blunt terms, with one reaction reading: “F*** you a**holes.”
