Emergency services were called to the intersection of State Highway 29 and State Highway 24 at Te Poi about 2.10am, after a crash involving a car and a truck and trailer.
The driver of the car, the sole occupant, died at the scene.
No other injuries were reported.
The Serious Crash Unit has carried out a scene examination and the road has since reopened.
Enquiries into the crash are ongoing.
