The Government has appointed David Ferguson as the new Chief Executive and Chief Review Officer of the Education Review Office, with Education Minister Erica Stanford welcoming the appointment.
The Education Review Office (ERO) is responsible for evaluating education policies and reviewing how effectively schools are performing across New Zealand.
Stanford said the organisation plays a key role in ensuring education decisions are informed by evidence and robust analysis.
“We need to make evidence-based education decisions, and the work ERO does to provide detailed education reviews is essential to that process,” she said.
Stanford said Ferguson’s experience in the education sector would enable him to quickly transition into the role and provide strong leadership for the organisation.
Stanford also acknowledged the contribution of interim leaders who have guided ERO during the recruitment process. She thanked Ruth Shinoda for serving as acting chief executive since late 2025 and Tim Fowler, who has held the acting chief executive role since May this year.
The appointment comes as the Government continues to focus on improving educational outcomes and strengthening accountability across the school system.
