Five people, including two teenage suspects, are dead after a shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego in California’s Clairemont area, with police confirming the threat has now been neutralised.
San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl said officers were called to the mosque complex at 11:43am local time after reports of gunfire and discovered three deceased adult victims outside the centre.
Additional calls reporting active gunfire nearby followed within minutes, triggering a massive emergency response involving up to 100 officers and lockdowns at surrounding schools. Two suspects, believed to be aged 17 and 19, were later found dead inside a nearby vehicle from apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds.
Police said one of the victims was a security guard employed by the Islamic center, while a nearby landscaper was also shot at but escaped injury. Authorities said no officers discharged their weapons during the incident and investigations into the motive and timeline remain ongoing.
The attack comes during one of the holiest periods in the Islamic calendar, just days before Eid al-Adha, as members of the local Muslim community prepare for celebrations and the Hajj pilgrimage season.
US President Donald Trump called the shooting a “terrible situation”.
“I’ve been given some early updates but we’re going to be going back and looking at it very strongly,” he said.
