A 25-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly fleeing a traffic stop in Manurewa before being found hiding in a bedroom at a Clover Park property.

At about 10.20pm, a patrol unit signalled for a Toyota Hilux to stop on Kerrs Road. Counties Manukau Central Area Prevention Manager Inspector Mark Chivers said the driver initially complied and pulled over.

“As an officer exited the patrol car to speak with the occupant, the driver allegedly accelerated away at speed,” Chivers said.

The Hilux was subsequently observed travelling through a red light and at excessive speed along Great South Road. Officers did not pursue the vehicle because of the manner in which it was being driven.

The Eagle helicopter was deployed and later located the Hilux parked on Hilltop Road in Clover Park.

A dog unit tracked a scent from the vehicle to an address on the street, where the suspected driver was located hiding in a bedroom and arrested.

Chivers said drivers who endangered themselves and other road users would be held accountable.

The 25-year-old is due to appear in Manukau District Court today charged with dangerous driving and failing to remain stopped for an enforcement officer.
