A former Napier teacher has been sentenced to three years’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to multiple sexual offences involving five of his students.
Matthew Ireland, 27, was sentenced in the Napier District Court, where victims’ families described his behaviour as a serious betrayal of trust that caused lasting harm to children and school communities.
Ireland admitted 12 charges, including eight counts of sexual conduct with a child under 12 and four involving a child under 16.
The court heard Ireland taught at Port Ahuriri School in 2022 before working as a relief teacher at other schools and later taking a position at Havelock North Intermediate, where he was stood down in 2024.
A Crown summary outlined grooming behaviour, including inappropriate physical contact, one-on-one interactions, discussions about bodies and relationships, and asking children to remove clothing.
Judge Bridget Mackintosh said the offending was deliberate and had a devastating ripple effect beyond the direct victims. Ireland was also placed on the child sex offender register.
Should have stuck to bestiality and pornographic child abuse – would have likely got home detention like that filthy P O S mcskimming.
