A man who intended to kill a rival but instead fatally shot an innocent woman has been sentenced to life imprisonment.
Mongrel Mob member Waaka Davis was jailed in the High Court at Palmerston North for the murder of 23-year-old Aaliyah Wilson, who was shot in the head with a shotgun in July last year while socialising at a house where Davis believed his intended target, Anthony Gabolinscy, was present.
The court heard Davis had spent weeks attempting to provoke Gabolinscy into a fight to the death following a falling-out linked to unwanted advances toward Gabolinscy’s partner.
On the night of the killing, Davis armed himself, forced his way into the house with his face covered and opened fire, killing Wilson instantly.
Although Davis did not intend to kill Wilson, the Crown successfully argued his intent to murder transferred to her. Justice Paul Radich sentenced Davis to life in prison with a minimum non-parole period of 17 years, noting his planning, lack of genuine remorse for the offence itself, and his tendency to blame the victim for being “in the wrong place at the wrong time”.
