The Wairoa community is set to receive an additional $500,000 from the government to aid in recovery after devastating floods last week.

The Wairoa River overflowed, inundating over 400 properties and causing approximately $40 million in damage.

The state of emergency was lifted by Mayor Craig Little on Wednesday morning.

Emergency Management Minister Mark Mitchell announced the new funding during his visit to the district, following an initial allocation of $100,000.

The additional funds are aimed at addressing immediate needs such as cleaning up properties, replacing essential items, and securing equipment for drying and dehumidifying affected homes.

Environment Minister Penny Simmonds has announced an urgent government-led review into the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council’s management of the Wairoa River.

The council has acknowledged that timely action to create a channel for the river could have mitigated the flooding’s impact.

The review will scrutinise the adequacy of monitoring, the decision-making process, and any possible improvements in managing such events.

The review’s findings and recommendations are expected to be delivered in August.
