The Green Party has condemned the Government’s decision not to recognise Palestinian statehood, calling it “cowardly” and damaging to New Zealand’s reputation as a voice for peace and justice.
Co-leader Marama Davidson said many New Zealanders were bitterly disappointed by the move, accusing Prime Minister Christopher Luxon’s Government of siding with the Trump administration instead of taking meaningful action to end the violence in Gaza.
Davidson noted that tens of thousands had marched in Auckland calling for sanctions on Israel and recognition of Palestine, but Foreign Minister Winston Peters offered only “empty words” at the UN.
The Greens have drafted a Member’s Bill to sanction Israel and say just six Government MPs need to support it for it to advance.
