Many home diagnostic tests are so poorly regulated they can be as unreliable as chance, a new NZ Medical Journal report warns.
The paper highlights rapidly growing use since the pandemic, noting that some over-the-counter Rapid Antigen Tests (RAT tests) — including those for chlamydia, gonorrhoea and herpes — were heavily marketed despite never being verified, with overseas data showing high rates of false positives and false negatives.
One STI test missed between 37% and 88% of infections, and past pregnancy kits have been withdrawn after alarming error rates.
Pathologist Samarina Musaad told state-funded media inaccurate results can cause serious harm, from misinformed pregnancy decisions to increased STI transmission due to false reassurance.
“There are huge concerns from many clinicians that these tests are little more than the flip of a coin,” she said.
Sub-standard tests have even reached clinical settings, while Pharmac can still fund unapproved devices. Regulations Minister David Seymour said Medsafe cannot vet every overseas product but urged consumers to buy from pharmacies, with work underway on a stronger approval process.
