A homicide investigation is underway following a fatal firearms incident at Beach Road Reserve in Onerahi this morning.
Emergency services responded to reports of an injured person at the reserve around 11:10 a.m. Upon arrival, authorities discovered one person deceased at the scene. A second individual, suffering from serious injuries, was transported to hospital for treatment.
Police have assured the public that there is no ongoing risk to the wider community.
“The key focus for us is determining the series of events that led up to this tragic incident,” said Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Shane Pilmer of Whangārei CIB.
Police have established cordons in the area, and Beach Road remains closed from Church Road while a scene examination is conducted. An increased police presence is expected as investigations continue.
Residents and motorists are urged to avoid the area. Police are also appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward by calling 105 and quoting job number P061751387. Anonymous tips can be provided via Crime Stoppers at 0800 555 111.
