Protect Kahurangi & NZ Inc has been allocated an urgent hearing at 10 am on Friday for an interim injunction application. The application will be heard by video link with a High Court Judge in Christchurch.

The applicant, represented by local public rights lawyer Sue Grey seeks to halt an imminent drop of 1080 poison in the Paraparas in Kahurangi National Park just kilometres from Takaka, Collingwood, Onekaka and other Golden Bay communities, estuaries and beaches.

The recent Cobb Valley aerial 1080 poison drop led to numerous complaints of 1080 poison baits immediately next to popular walking tracks, water catchments and even immediately next to the Cobb Valley Road.

The community is really concerned that deadly ecotoxic poison baits are left lying in public places, even despite the Safety Data Sheet prohibiting release to the environment. The government seems to be treating deadly poison baits as if they are safe despite the labels classifying 1080 baits as DEADLY poison, ECOTOXIC and reproductive and developmental toxicity.

Lawyer for Protect Kahurangi, Sue Grey, says “the community is concerned that DOC is conflicted,  and they wont listen to community concerns. People dont want the risk of deadly poison in their water supplies or food chain. They are incensed by 1080 operation poisoning large numbers of kea and other birds. They want to be able to hunt and gather food, and be able to walk their dogs on the beach without fear of poisoned carcases that may cruelly kill their pets.”
