Iranian state ‘strong’ despite death of top officials – foreign minister

Abbas Araghchi has said the killing of politicians by the US and Israel will not bring down the government.

The killing of senior Iranian officials by the US and Israel will not cripple the government, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said.

Araghchi made the comments shortly after Iran confirmed that Ali Larijani, the country’s security chief and one of its most powerful politicians, was killed in an airstrike in a Tehran suburb on Tuesday.

“I do not know why the Americans and the Israelis still have not understood this point: The Islamic Republic of Iran has a strong political structure with established political, economic, and social institutions,” Araghchi told Al Jazeera.

“The presence or absence of a single individual does not affect this structure,” he added.

“Of course, individuals are influential, and each person plays their – some better, some worse, some less – but what matters is that the political system in Iran is a very solid structure,” the diplomat said.

The US and Israel have killed a number of high-ranking Iranian officials and commanders, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who died during the first wave of strikes on February 28. His son, Mojtaba Khamenei, was later appointed to succeed him.

US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have listed regime change in Iran as part of their rationale for the war and have called on Iranians to overthrow the government.

Larijani said earlier this month that the orderly selection of Mojtaba Khamenei as the new supreme leader by the Assembly of Experts, amid ongoing airstrikes, demonstrates the resilience of Iran’s political system and society.

  1. The US has destroyed its international reputation, which was never sterling to start with. Nations will increasingly look to themselves for security and view them, as an untrustworthy pariah.

Political parties who don’t see the writing on the wall, will find their support bases shrinking and them out of office or regulated to junior partner roles. Signs of this are clear in UK, France, Germany, Italy and even Australia, with the surprising rise of One Nation.

  2. Iran appears “strong” also because their logical reasoning remains robust. In contrast, the media enables the USA’s continued contradictions. For example, Marco Rubio let the cat out of the bag when he said that Israel was going to launch their war and therefore he alleged the USA also needed to attacvk Iran “pre-emptively” – big mistake.

Logically therefore, Israel was the imminent threat, not Iran. And if Trump was true to his no-new-wars policy, Trump should have bombed Israel to stop them starting this war in the Middle East. Too many Americans were previously already aware of and supported the “Greater Israel” project and therefore supported this war. The imminent threat obviously came from Israel, not Iran but there’s a failure to understand that – and all of the media and our own government just advance the USA’s bullmanure. This deception is aided by the entrenched and historic western prejudice and racism against Iran.

There’s ample precedent for the USA to rein in Israel – refer the Suez crisis in 1956 (70 years ago)

  3. Well, this war is the result of the j*ws who have been blackmailing the west, first with the shoa, then with antiCmitism and finally with epstein/ mossad syndicate.
Needless to say that most western gvt ( and not only the US) are corrupt and bought by israhell.
It is not only the sionists, but also all jewish organizations/ lobbies who are at work for the destruction of the west
