Five astronauts aboard the International Space Station were ordered into a docked SpaceX Dragon spacecraft and prepared for a possible emergency evacuation after an air leak in the station’s Russian segment worsened.
The precautionary move came as two Russian cosmonauts attempted repairs on a transfer tunnel connected to the Zvezda service module, where cracks have caused intermittent leaks for about six years.
NASA directed the crew into the Dragon spacecraft while repairs involving a saw were underway, citing safety concerns, before later clearing them to return to normal operations after the work was paused.
Russian space agency Roscosmos said the leak posed no immediate threat to the crew or station systems.
The ISS, continuously occupied since 1998, remains jointly operated by the United States, Russia, Canada, Japan and several European nations.
