JPMorgan admits debanking Trump after Jan 6

jpmorgan admits debanking trump

JPMorgan Chase has acknowledged it closed bank accounts linked to US President Donald Trump and several of his businesses in the weeks following the January 6, 2021 ‘Capitol riot’, a revelation emerging amid a $5 billion lawsuit accusing the bank of political discrimination.

Court filings show the bank notified Trump and affiliated hospitality companies in February 2021 that it would end its banking relationship, giving them until April to transfer hundreds of millions of dollars to other institutions.

In letters submitted to the court, JPMorgan stated it had “decided to close its banking relationship” and informed Trump directly that it may determine a client’s interests are no longer served by maintaining an account.

Trump’s legal team claims the move amounted to unlawful “debanking,” alleging the former president was placed on a financial “blacklist” because of his political views.

They argue the decision caused significant financial and reputational harm and reflects a broader trend of banks restricting services over ideology.

JPMorgan maintains account closures are governed by risk and compliance policies, while CEO Jamie Dimon has insisted the bank does not act based on political or religious affiliation.
