Darryl Grant Bridgeman, a repeat rapist already serving more than 16 years for the attacks of two tourists in 2006 and 2020, has avoided an indefinite sentence after a High Court judge ruled his risk of reoffending would likely diminish by the time he is released at age 71.
Bridgeman was sentenced in Hamilton to an additional five years’ imprisonment, with a two-thirds non-parole period, for historical sexual offending against two boys in the 1990s.
Justice Peter Andrew acknowledged Bridgeman’s persistent, predatory behaviour and the severe harm inflicted on his victims, but said age and future rehabilitation programmes would mitigate risk.
The Crown had pushed for preventive detention, citing his refusal to address the causes of his offending and a personality dysfunction identified in specialist reports, but the judge ultimately opted to extend his cumulative sentence instead.
…neuter, & medicate…while serving time!
They should have chopped his nuts off a long time ago
