A Northland woman has avoided prison after four of her dogs violently attacked a neighbour on her lawn leaving her with serious injuries that required an emergency helicopter flight to Whangārei Hospital.

The March 2025 incident began when one of Stacey Walker-Haturini’s dogs escaped a Kaiwaka property and clashed with the victim’s pets at her gate. Three more dogs wriggled under the fence, swarming the woman and biting her arms and legs.

A neighbour who rushed to help was also mauled and suffered lasting ligament damage.

Walker-Haturini, who was in Kaitāia dealing with a family death and a difficult breakup, returned hours later and helped council officers catch the remaining dog.

In court, both victims and Kaipara District Council acknowledged her personal hardships and supported a lenient penalty. Judge Peter Davey agreed her culpability was reduced because she hadn’t released the animals. Walker-Haturini received 180 hours of community work, with the dogs already euthanised.
