The Northland community is grieving the tragic death of 3-year-old Catalya Remana Tangimetua-Pepene, remembered for her radiant smile and playful spirit.
She died last Wednesday in Kaikohe despite emergency efforts to save her.
On the same day as her funeral, a 45-year-old man appeared in court charged with her murder and earlier assault.
Neighbours, devastated by the loss, described her to state media as a joyful child whose smile “lit up the whole world.”
Emotions ran high at the court hearing, which saw tight security and interim name suppression granted for the accused, who is set to reappear in the Whangarei High Court in June.

I am sorry but this is what happens when you pay people who don’t work to have children .
Inevitably the wrong sort of people bring children into the world and have no inclination nor idea how to parent.
I don’t hear TPM say anything??? Will the media report which tribe the perpetrator affiliates to or is that just for other stories???
I sadly can’t see it will ever get better. No justice for baby Ru or Chris and Cru kahui……..🙁
Bring back the death penalty for these scum that murder children.
