Kāinga Ora cancels planned homes and sells off surplus land in ‘major financial reset’

Kainga Ora news

State housing agency Kāinga Ora is scrapping 212 housing projects that would have delivered nearly 3,500 homes and selling off 36 hectares of vacant land as part of a “financial reset” ordered by Housing Minister Chris Bishop.

The agency’s CEO Matt Crockett said the reset, which includes writing down up to $220 million, aims to refocus Kāinga Ora as a landlord rather than a developer.

The decision followed a review of over 460 projects, with those deemed financially unviable or poorly located being abandoned.

While 254 projects will continue, delivering over 1,800 homes, the agency hopes the changes will restore financial sustainability after recent job cuts and a shift in direction.

  1. Where is the accountability of wasting $220 million?
    Where did that money go?
    What was it for?
    Where are assets now?
    Who signed on those contracts?
    Who was paid?
And who is still given any position to squander away more tax-payer money?
WE work for it, WE want to know!
Or do we live in a parasitic bureaucracy of freeloaders?
Shall we see what government does?
Oh shit, it’s the same club and part of the problem!

  2. Disgusting! HNZ have been ripping NZers off for years with their inefficiencies! MHUD are another waste of taxpayers dollars – the people to end homelessness… Great tui ad right there 🤬

  3. Another New Labour Party hangover
Good to see the punch bowl has been taken away
It was one hell of a party while it lasted
Labour spending like drunken soldiers on shore leave
But that’s what socialists are good at and do
Spending money frivolously with scant disregard to impending consequences
    Until its all gone
    Socialism the road to communism

    • With respect you are kidding yourself if you think it’s over. These news releases are performative if you ask me. The corruption marches on. They simply reshape it and take it private. It’s an illusion. We must stop the globalists by taking the power away from the red and blue parties.
