As the summer season approaches and more people spend time outdoors, Hawke’s Bay Police are reminding residents to take extra precautions to keep their homes secure.

Recent reports show that opportunistic thieves have been taking advantage of unlocked doors and windows, even when people are at home.

Thieves are always looking for opportunities,” says Detective Gabrielle Parsons.

There has also been an increase in the number of diesel thefts in rural Hastings.

“Thieves are lazy, and simple steps like locking a gate or not leaving keys in your vehicle can make all the difference… Don’t make it easy for them.

“Even short lapses in security can lead to stolen items, such as phones, wallets and keys.”

Detective Parsons encouraged people to take simple steps to deter criminals.

“Lock all doors and windows, even if you’re only stepping outside briefly. Window stays are a good investment because they give you ventilation without compromising security.

“Alarms, sensor lighting, and quality locks are all good investments to make your home less of a target.”

People are also encouraged people to get to know their neighbours.

“Most importantly, report any suspicious activity to Police on 111 if it’s happening now, or contact us via 105 if it’s after the fact.”

  1. In other words if you get burgled don’t bother ringing the cops, they’ll
do nothing about it even if it’s on camera, they couldn’t care less.
They’ve got better things to do like park up in droves at weigh-stations revenue-collecting
and sneaking around at the bottom of hills with radar detectors.

    • Yes I agree. And now their latest plan is to target thousands of perfectly law abiding road users and stop them going about their lawful business on the pretext that they might have taken codeine or Voltaren two days before.

Meanwhile at headquarters their top brass is masturbating over images of children on their computers.

  2. No way to defend oneself and family / home / business under any ‘Stand Your Ground’ law or ‘Castle Law’ which is reflective of the U.N. Right to Self Sefence under Chapter 7 Article 51, which includes not only Nation/States, butthe INDIVIDUAL CITIZEN!!!!
Jabby removed the remainder of these options, as did the previous NZ Uni-Party Governments.
At least I have a repeater / easy-cocking crossbow which have taken down fully-grown enraged wild pigs…
The outlaws / gangs are making use of firearms…but a law-abiding NZ Citizen is so heavily vetted to the point of privacy invasions and causing ‘referees’ to lose time, money and suffering thru an embarrassing interview by the cops.
More detailed and additional vetting by the cops for the Firearms Licence holder, so much so that many have sold their firearms off due to the complex paperwork to renew a Firearms Licence, and the inconvenience and cost to do so!
This is another form of ‘Gun Control & Disarmamant of the Population’ which opens the door to government tyranny.
In countries where Gun Control was implemented, tyranny, and genocides always followed.
Case in point; Gaza and the West Bank! Northeastern U.S. States and the Left Coast of the U.S..
THE NEW ZEALAND LOYAL PARTY PROMISES SELF-DEFENCE VIA ‘STAND YOUR GROUND’ & ‘CASTLE LAWS’ IF THEY CAN GET INTO PARLIAMENT!
And the costly ‘Firearms Registry’ will disappear as well, because in the event of an invasion, the invading force will know where to look forthe Firearms holders. and confiscate the firearms and / or execute the holders on the spot!!
& BTW- the revised Firearms Code is actually more oppressive despite the false hope that Nicola McKee promised to end such red tape & bureaucracy.
VOTE FOR THE NEW ZEALAND LOYAL PARTY IN 2026! The ONLY NZ Political Party that will uphold your right to self-defence!

  3. Anybody who leaves their keys in the ignition unattended
Or idling while in at the shop
Deserves to have their vehicle stolen
Only problem is because of their incompetence we all end up paying for it
Like the shoplifting epidemic which will burgeon with ever increasing hard times
Not only opportunistic but highly organized
    There are thieves and receivers
    Supply and demand
And all other forms of criminality
Thank God (Whoever he is) we are 100% green and pure

  4. If You’ve got the old style wooden window frames with slide up windows
Drill a couple of holes about 6 inches up from the sill on either side and put bolts in the holes
    Rodent proof
    Very cost effective
Have doors locked at all times
    Especially the elderly
