Labour hits new low as Ardern’s favourability rating goes into negative

The Taxpayer’s Union Curia poll had both major parties losing support.

Labour falls one point from last month to 32% – its lowest ever level in the Taxpayer’s Union poll – while National is also down two points to 37%. ACT is up one point and the Greens are up three points with both sitting on 11%.

The smaller parties are New Zealand First on 2.8% and the Māori Party on 1.6%.

Translated into seats this would mean National gaining 49, Labour 41, ACT and the Greens 14 each, and The Maori Party 2.

Favourability Rating

Ardern’s FR hits a record low of -1%, the first time she has been below zero in history, and a massive drop from the +32% she scored in September 2021. The score is now largely academic, given her resignation.

National Party leader Christopher Luxon is also on -1%, a big jump from the -33% recorded also in September 2021.

FR’s are calculated by subtracting the percentage of New Zealanders who say they have an unfavourable view of a leader from the percentage of those who have a ‘favourable’ view.

Winston Peters is currently on -40%, while ACT Party leader David Seymour is at -5%.

Callum Purves, Campaigns Manager at the Taxpayer’s Union said:

‘While the Centre-Left have not been able to govern on their own in our poll numbers since March last year, the election remains close. The Centre-Right have never been more than three seats over the 61-seat threshold required to form government.

‘A new prime minister, a new cabinet and potentially a new policy agenda means that everything is still to play for over the next 9 months.’
