Esarona Lologa, a convicted violent offender with a long history of schizophrenia, absconded from an Auckland mental health facility in April 2023 and weeks later set fire to Wellington’s Loafers Lodge, killing five people.
Despite a warrant for his arrest, police searching in Auckland were unaware he had travelled to Wellington, where he was denied emergency housing before moving into the hostel.
According to state-funded media, multiple agencies—including police, Health NZ, and MSD—had fragmented knowledge of his situation but failed to connect critical information before the fatal fire. Lologa, once jailed for attempted murder, had a long record of psychotic relapses, violence, and non-compliance with treatment.
