The Queensgate Night Market in Lower Hutt shut down after just four weeks, following major crowding, traffic problems and safety concerns during its launch.
Vendors and visitors described the opening as chaotic, with food trucks struggling to enter and set up, long queues snaking through the carpark, and thousands of people squeezed into limited space.
The crowds remained strong in subsequent weeks.
The closure was first announced over Labour weekend due to “unexpected compliance issues,” with organisers later confirming the market would be paused for the rest of the year.
Hutt City Council said the market could return once safety and compliance requirements were resolved.
