Prime Minister Christopher Luxon says attacks on fuel tankers and energy infrastructure in the Middle East are “leading directly to higher fuel prices for Kiwis,” as New Zealand joins the United Kingdom and other partners in condemning Iran’s actions in the Gulf.
In a public statement, Luxon said Iran had “forced the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz to ships carrying fuel and other critical goods to places like New Zealand,” emphasising that New Zealand has a “longstanding record of working with like-minded partners to ensure open supply lines for global trade.”
He added that “any future decision for New Zealand to support multilateral efforts to ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz would need to be considered by Cabinet.”
His comments have sparked a wave of mixed and often heated public reaction online.
Critics challenged the framing of events, with one response stating, “That’s not quite true. Israel is attacking Iran’s oil and gas infrastructure… and this is in retaliation,” while another asked, “Who started this war you clown.”
Others argued Iran’s actions were a response to earlier strikes, with one commenter writing, “Iran gets attacked by America and Israel and in retaliation shuts off energy supply… and Chris Luxon thinks that he’s doing something by calling out… the country who was attacked???”
