Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has defended missing the latest “Coalition of the Willing” virtual meeting on Ukraine, saying the 1am timing made it impractical given his Cabinet commitments the next morning.
French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer co-chaired the talks, joined by Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky, following US President Donald Trump’s meeting with Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
Leaders praised Trump’s pledge of security guarantees for Ukraine, with Macron and Starmer set to travel to Washington for further talks. Luxon stressed New Zealand was represented by officials and reiterated that no new commitments have been made without Cabinet approval.
