U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi says Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife have been formally charged in New York with a range of serious offences, including drug trafficking and illegal weapons possession.
According to Bondi, the indictments were filed in the Southern District of New York and accuse Maduro and Cilia Flores of participating in a narco-terrorism conspiracy, conspiring to import cocaine, and possessing machine guns and other destructive weapons, as well as plotting to use those weapons against the United States. Neither Maduro nor his wife has yet entered a plea.
The announcement follows US military strikes on Venezuela on Saturday. President Donald Trump later said Maduro and Flores had been captured and removed from the country. Venezuelan authorities condemned the strikes, describing them as a grave act of military aggression.
Washington has for years accused Maduro of working with drug cartels and facilitating the flow of narcotics into the United States. The US has refused to recognise him as Venezuela’s legitimate leader and previously offered a $50 million reward for information leading to his arrest and conviction. Maduro has consistently rejected the allegations, arguing they are being used to justify foreign intervention and efforts to overthrow his government.

China was previously allied to Venezuela – would such alliance continue after Maduro’s kidnapping?
China is an oil importer and would therefore benefit if oil prices drop – and this is what should happen if Trump controls Venezuelan oil.
Russia on the other hand is an energy exporter and therefore might be a more natural ally of Venezuela if they want to keep oil prices high.
This could be a smart move by Trump if it forces a wedge between Russia and China by using Venezuelan oil.
Oh and hows he going to do that exactly? A now wholly hostile local populace, after there head of state was abducted. How does he plan to keep the oil infrastructure form being sabotaged or destroyed? He did have a great opportunity to negotiate with Maduro. Now all that’s left is a hornets nest.
For Russia and China this probably wont change much. Russia has massive resources it will continue to trade with China. All this has done, is make them both even more wary and untrusting of the US, than they already are. BTW Venezuelan oil is hard to process, so it wont level any playing fields, even if they get their hands on it for a time.
If China doesn’t really care for cheaper oil and instead thinks longer-term with a BRICS-focus then China would need to do something in the Caribbean to respond to Trump rather than do nothing. Do what? Take over the Panama Canal? Either way, it seems to me the initiative rests with China right now and what they choose to do or not do.
