Mount Albert Grammar School, Auckland’s second-largest high school, is considering splitting into separate middle and senior schools to manage a projected roll of 4500 students amid rapid population growth and construction in its zone.
Headmaster Patrick Drumm told legacy media (paywalled) the restructure would ease overcrowding, improve timetabling flexibility, and foster greater student connection, with the model inspired by large Australian schools. Although the change would not attract extra government funding, it would allow better use of facilities and leadership opportunities for younger students. The move, backed by the school’s board, could start symbolically next year and is being watched by other overcrowded Auckland schools struggling with delayed new classrooms and capacity pressures.
