A 26-year-old man has died after getting into difficulty in the water at Karioitahi Beach on Monday night.
Police were alerted around 7.10pm after reports that two men were struggling to return to shore, prompting a major response from Surf Life Saving’s search and rescue team, who deployed a rescue watercraft and two inflatable rescue boats.
The Police Eagle helicopter also attended, locating the second man in the water.
One man was successfully brought back to shore by lifeguards, but despite efforts to revive the second man, he died at the scene. Counties Manukau South Area Commander Inspector Jared Pirret said their thoughts are with the man’s family, friends, and the responders who “did their utmost to bring about a good outcome.” The death has been referred to the Coroner.
