Man sentenced for exploiting children online and possessing illegal material

Jason Wayne Kerr news

Jason Wayne Kerr has been sentenced to three years and nine months in prison after admitting to possessing and dealing in child exploitation material.

His criminal activities, which spanned over seven years, involved paying women in Asia to make their children perform naked acts for his viewing. Kerr, 45, faced charges for thousands of images and videos found in his possession, alongside engaging in video conversations aimed at sexually exploiting minors.

The Nelson District Court heard how Kerr’s engagement with such material began in his early twenties, citing depression and social withdrawal as contributing factors. Despite his defense, Judge David Ruth emphasised Kerr’s full awareness of the content he possessed, dismissing any claims of ignorance towards the severity of the material.

According to a legacy media report, Kerr’s operation included using cloud storage to access and store exploitative material, with one collection containing over 600 files, including distressing content involving a toddler. Authorities uncovered Kerr’s extensive collection during a search of his home in 2021, leading to his arrest and subsequent sentencing.

Additionally, Kerr used a social media application to exchange in-app currency for videos and images depicting child sexual exploitation, spending over $790 on such transactions. His defense argued the period of offending represented a low point in Kerr’s life, but this did not significantly mitigate his sentence. Kerr’s guilty plea, personal circumstances, and cooperation with the authorities resulted in a reduced sentence from an initial six years and three months.

  2. Sentence is too short and far too lenient. He’ll be back at it in a few years time, the recidivism rate for these freaks is always sky high.
