Shu Man Poon, 43, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum non-parole period of 19 years for the 2023 murders of Ellerslie couple Fuk-Fu Joseph Kwok and Mei Han Chong.
Poon pleaded guilty just before his scheduled trial, which was to proceed alongside co-accused Lok Fung Lorrence Li, whose retrial is now set for August 2026.
Strict court suppression orders limit reporting, but it is known that Kwok was found stabbed by his son in their home, while Chong’s body was later discovered in bushland.
The Hong Kong-born couple had lived in New Zealand since 1988.
