Two Jewish people were killed and four others seriously injured in a car ramming and stabbing attack at Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Manchester on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.
Police shot dead the attacker, who appeared to be wearing a vest resembling an explosive device, later confirmed as non-viable. The incident unfolded just after 09:30 BST, when a vehicle was driven at worshippers before the suspect exited with a knife. Worshippers and security staff prevented the attacker from entering the packed synagogue, while eyewitnesses described the chaotic and terrifying scene.
Greater Manchester Police quickly declared a major incident, with armed officers arriving within minutes and fatally shooting the suspect after he ignored warnings.
The attack has been declared a terrorist incident, with counter-terrorism police confirming two arrests have been made.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer condemned the “horrific” assault, left an international summit early, and chaired a COBR emergency meeting in London.
Additional police have been deployed to synagogues across the UK to reassure Jewish communities. Local leaders, including Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, urged the public to stay away from the area as emergency services worked. Authorities have not yet confirmed the suspect’s identity or whether he was known to them.
