British police have identified the suspect in Thursday’s deadly attack at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Manchester as Jihad Al-Shamie, a 35-year-old British citizen of Syrian descent.
Al-Shamie drove into pedestrians before fatally stabbing a security guard, killing two people and leaving three others seriously injured, before being shot dead by armed officers.
Though he was wearing what appeared to be an explosive vest, police confirmed it was not viable. The incident has been declared a terrorist attack, with three others arrested on suspicion of preparing acts of terrorism, as UK authorities heighten security around synagogues nationwide.
