Auckland Council has referred Manurewa Local Board member Marshal Ahluwalia to the Serious Fraud Office after social media allegations accused him of seeking payments and campaign donations in exchange for allocating work while employed at a freight transport company in 2024.
The claims emerged in a video circulating online and prompted Manurewa-Papakura councillor Daniel Newman to escalate the matter to council leadership due to the seriousness of the accusations.
Council officials confirmed the issue had been passed to the SFO, while Ahluwalia has reportedly taken leave from the local board until late June and stepped back from the Manurewa Action Team ticket.
Police said they previously examined a fraud complaint linked to the matter last year but concluded there was insufficient evidence to establish a criminal offence.
