Maritime NZ investigates fatal incident at Wellington Port

Wellington Port death

Maritime NZ has opened an investigation after a worker died in an incident at Wellington’s CentrePort this morning.

Logistics company C3 confirmed the deceased was one of its employees and said its immediate focus was supporting his family, colleagues and those who responded at the scene.

CentrePort chief executive Anthony Delaney told state-funded media the worker was employed by an independent stevedoring company and that CentrePort was cooperating with C3, Maritime NZ and police.

The circumstances surrounding the death have yet to be established, with Maritime NZ promising a thorough investigation and noting the substantial safety work undertaken across the port sector over the past four years. The Maritime Union expressed its condolences to the worker’s family, friends and colleagues, while WorkSafe has also been notified.
