The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore experienced a catastrophic collapse, sending several people and vehicles plunging into the river below, according to emergency response teams.
The incident involved the Key Bridge in Baltimore being hit by a Singapore-flagged vessel, the Dali container ship, as confirmed by vessel tracking systems.
The ship, measuring 300 metres in length, was en route to Colombo, Sri Lanka, when the tragedy unfolded.
Tracking data revealed that the Dali left the Port Breeze terminal at approximately 12:45am ET (4:45am GMT), making its way toward the Francis Scott Key Bridge. However, the vessel halted near the bridge roughly 45 minutes later, indicating the moment of impact.
Subsequent observations from air traffic radars have identified police helicopters conducting multiple sweeps over the affected location.
A spokesperson for the Baltimore City Fire Department has declared the bridge’s collapse as a ‘mass casualty event.’ While the exact number of casualties remains unconfirmed, further details from the emergency services are expected to emerge soon.
