Media reports have named the young woman killed in an incident in Massey, West Auckland yesterday as 21 year old Farzana Yaqubi.
Yaqubi was studying law at AUT. Her father was a member of the Hazara ethnic minority from Afghanistan, and had fled the country from the Taliban in 2001, eventually arriving in New Zealand as a refugee.
The man accused of her murder appeared in the Auckland High Court today. Court documents list him as a 30 year old, living in East Tamaki. He was granted interim name suppression so he could notify his parents in India of the murder charge.
